You Are Not Alone
Studies show that as many as one in three adults experience some level of dental anxiety, and about 12% have a strong dental phobia that keeps them away from the chair entirely. At Cville Dentist, there’s zero judgment here — you’ll be met where you are, and your care plan will be built around what feels safe to you. Plenty of our most anxious new patients come to us from Charlottesville, UVA, and Albemarle County because a friend told them we were gentle with them after years of avoiding the dentist altogether.
Your comfort starts before you ever recline in the chair. Longer appointments are scheduled for anxious patients so nothing feels rushed. Every step is explained before it happens. You get a “stop signal” so you can pause treatment at any moment. And blankets, neck pillows, and noise-cancelling headphones are standard, not special requests.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is the most common sedation option in dentistry, and for good reason. You breathe a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nose mask, and within a minute or two you feel a warm, floating calm. It doesn’t put you to sleep — you stay fully conscious and can respond to Dr. Karamcheti — but your anxiety drops and time seems to pass faster. The effects wear off within about five minutes of removing the mask, so you can drive yourself home and head back to work or school the same day. Nitrous is safe for children, teens, and adults, and it’s a great option for routine cleanings, fillings, and simple procedures.
Oral Sedation
If you need a deeper level of relaxation, oral conscious sedation may be the right choice. About an hour before your appointment, you take a prescription pill (usually a mild benzodiazepine) that leaves you drowsy but responsive. Many people remember very little about the procedure afterward. Oral sedation is a good fit for longer appointments, multiple procedures in a single visit, or when your anxiety doesn’t respond to nitrous alone. Because it takes several hours to fully wear off, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you to and from the office and stay with you for the rest of the day.
How Your Anxiety Gets Handled
- Take it slow. For very anxious patients, a no-exam “meet the team” visit can come first — just come in, see the space, and meet Dr. Karamcheti before any treatment is on the table.
- Tell-show-do. Every tool gets explained, shown, and then used — no surprises. Especially helpful for kids and adults with bad experiences in the past.
- Topical numbing before any injection. A numbing gel sits on the spot for a full 60 seconds before anything goes in, so the shot itself is barely noticeable.
- Breaks whenever you need them. Raise your hand and everything stops. You’re in control.
- Distraction tools. Noise-cancelling headphones, streaming audio, or your own playlist on your phone — whatever helps you settle in.
Tell Us Ahead of Time
When you book your appointment, let your Charlottesville front desk know you experience dental anxiety. Your chart gets flagged, extra time is built into your visit, and sedation options are discussed with you before you ever arrive. You deserve to feel calm in the chair — and that’s exactly where this team will take you.
