Understanding TMJ Disorders
Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the hinges that connect your lower jaw to your skull, one right in front of each ear. Those two joints and the muscles that move them make up one of the most complex joint systems in your body. When something goes wrong — clenching, an injury, arthritis, or an uneven bite — it’s called a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). You might feel it as jaw pain, clicking or popping, limited opening, earaches, sore facial muscles, or chronic headaches that look a lot like migraines.
What’s Usually Behind It
The TMJ patients we see in our Charlottesville office most often grind or clench at night (called bruxism), have an uneven bite or missing back teeth, are carrying a lot of stress, or are recovering from whiplash or a sports injury. Sometimes the disc inside the joint slips slightly out of place, which is what gives you that telltale click with every open and close.
How Your Jaw Is Evaluated
Your evaluation starts with a real conversation — when does it hurt, what makes it better, what makes it worse. From there, Dr. Karamcheti does a hands-on exam of your joints and muscles, checks how your bite comes together, and — when needed — uses gentle digital X-rays or a 3D CBCT scan so the joint structures can be seen in detail. The goal is to understand the actual root cause, not just chase the symptoms.
Your Treatment Options
Most TMJ cases respond beautifully to conservative care. A custom-made night guard or occlusal splint protects your teeth and takes pressure off the joints while you sleep — and for many people, that one simple device is the single biggest relief. You’ll also hear about targeted jaw stretches, warm compresses, short-term anti-inflammatory medication, stress management, and soft-food phases during flare-ups. If your bite itself is out of balance, carefully planned reshaping or restorative work can help. In rare cases, you’ll get a referral to a TMJ specialist or physical therapist for extra support. The vast majority of our Charlottesville neighbors get meaningful relief without any surgery at all.
