Dental Crowns in Charlottesville, VA

When a tooth is too damaged for a filling, a crown rebuilds it from the outside in. Our Charlottesville office offers both same-day CEREC crowns and premium lab-fabricated porcelain.

When a Crown Is the Right Fix

A crown (sometimes called a cap) covers the entire visible part of your tooth to restore its shape, strength, and look. A crown is usually the right call when a tooth has a cavity too large for a filling to support, has cracked or broken, has just had a root canal, or is worn down from grinding. Crowns are also what caps a dental implant and anchors the ends of a bridge.

Choosing Your Crown Material

Today’s crowns are made from porcelain, zirconia, or a blend of the two. All-porcelain crowns look stunningly natural and are often the right choice for your front teeth. Zirconia is nearly unbreakable and holds up beautifully on back molars that take heavy chewing. Dr. Karamcheti will walk you through the right material for your tooth, your bite, and your cosmetic goals — in plain English, no pressure.

The Traditional Two-Visit Process

A traditional crown takes two visits. At your first one, your tooth is gently reshaped, a digital scan is taken, and a comfortable temporary crown goes on while your permanent one is crafted in the lab over about two weeks. At your second visit, the temporary comes off, your permanent crown is checked for fit and color, and it’s cemented into place.

Same-Day Crowns with CEREC

In many cases, your crown can be made in a single visit right here in the office using CEREC (a same-day crown system, so you leave whole). After a quick digital scan of the prepared tooth, a milling machine carves your crown from a solid block of ceramic while you wait. It’s stained, glazed, and bonded the same day — no temporary, no second visit, no messy goopy impressions. It’s ideal if you’re a busy UVA student, a parent juggling the Forest Lakes commute, or anyone who just can’t easily come back in.

Caring for Your Crown

With routine brushing, flossing, and your regular cleanings, a modern crown can last 15 years or more. Skip chewing ice and extremely hard foods directly on your crowned tooth, and wear a night guard if you grind. A crown protects the tooth underneath, but it doesn’t make that tooth cavity-proof — so keeping up with your six-month hygiene visits is how you get the full lifespan.
