Lost Filling or Crown

It usually happens mid-meal: a filling pops out or a crown comes off in a bite of caramel. Here’s what to do before you can get to our Charlottesville office.

Is It Really an Emergency?

A lost filling or crown is usually semi-urgent rather than a five-alarm emergency — but it’s not something to sit on. Without the restoration in place, your underlying tooth is suddenly exposed to bacteria, temperature swings, and chewing forces it was never built to handle on its own. Many people in Charlottesville describe sharp sensitivity to cold air or sweets right after a filling comes out — that’s the exposed dentin layer talking directly to your nerve.

Until You Can Get to the Office

If you still have the crown, rinse it gently and tuck it into a small, clean container. Over-the-counter temporary dental cement (you’ll find it at most pharmacies along Route 29 or in town) can hold your crown loosely in place for a few days — but please skip super glue or household adhesives. They damage the tooth and are toxic. For a lost filling, a bit of dental wax or a small dab of sugar-free gum can plug the hole temporarily. Chew on the other side, and keep the spot as clean as you can with gentle brushing and warm salt-water rinses.

How Your Visit Goes

At your appointment, Dr. Karamcheti will take a careful look at the tooth, capture a gentle digital X-ray to check for any decay or fracture hiding under the old restoration, and walk you through your options. If the original crown is intact and the tooth underneath is healthy, it can often be re-cemented in a single, short visit. If the crown is damaged or new decay has crept in, you’ll get a fresh crown made with our in-office CEREC system (a same-day crown, so you leave whole) or from a trusted lab when the situation calls for it. Lost fillings are typically replaced with tooth-colored composite, or — for larger cavities — a porcelain inlay or onlay that adds real strength.

Why Restorations Come Loose

Old fillings and crowns fail for a few predictable reasons: new decay sneaking in around the edges, cement that has simply worn out after many years, fractures in the tooth itself, or nighttime grinding and clenching that slowly works a restoration loose. Your exam is where the underlying cause gets caught, so the replacement actually lasts. If clenching or grinding turns out to be the culprit, you’ll hear about a custom night guard — simple, comfortable, and one of the best investments you can make in your teeth.
